The Spruce Grove Saints looked to finish the four game cohort series against the Drayton Valley Thunder on a strong note at home at the Grant Fuhr Arena on Saturday, but found themselves in a losing battle, as they fell 4-1 to the Thunder for the second consecutive night.

The first period remained scoreless, despite a strong effort from the Saints, who outshot the Thunder 13-4 in the first frame.

Thunder forward Dylan Price opened the scoring in the second frame with an assist from linemate Mason Marcellus, just before the halfway mark of the period. Just 32 seconds later Thunder defenceman, Brett Bamber found the back of the net, with assists from Marcellus and Price, to give Drayton Valley a two-goal lead.

About four and a half minutes later, Saints forward Sam Vincent cut the Thunder’s lead in half when he buried the Saints first and only goal of the game off a pass from Saints forward Brett Pfoh. That was short-lived however, as Thunder forward Daniel Kernaghan restored Drayton Valley’s two-goal lead just 49 seconds later, with Ben Stollery and Dexton Mozell chipping in with assists, to make it 3-1 for the Thunder after 40 minutes.

The final frame saw plenty of back and forth action but only one goal late in the period, as Ty Whitford netted the Thunder’s fourth and final marker on the power play with just over two minutes remaining in the game from defenceman Kabe Bleay, to seal the 4-1 victory for Drayton Valley.

Saints goaltender Thomas Couture stopped 23 of 27 shots he faced while the Thunders’s Eric Ward stopped 35 of 36 shots he faced Saturday night.
